Indonesian ferry crew rescued off Japan

TOKYO —
Japan’s coast guard on Monday plucked the Indonesian crew of a ferry to safety after receiving a distress call from the vessel, officials said.
The 833-ton Masagena put out a Mayday call Monday morning after it began taking on water 11 kilometers north of Yakushima island in the far southwest, a coast guard official said.
The coast guard dispatched a helicopter and a patrol boat and had rescued 10 of the 12 crew members, the official said.
“The remaining two—the captain and engineer—are now working with the coast guard on board so that the ferry does not drift,” the official said, adding that nobody appeared injured.
The ferry with a capacity of 480 passengers was being taken from Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture for use in Indonesia.
